Sky blue

In her exhibition "Himmelblau", Julia Belova draws on her favorite overlapping and intertwining of meanings. By revisiting the theme of death and exploring the intersection of Freud's "Eros" and "Thanatos" - the simultaneous longing for death and sexual pleasure - she continues her work of "queering" the Baroque.

The artist fuses baroque aesthetics and elements of BDSM culture, searching for the common implicit or explicit desire for pleasure and pain, which is also repeatedly visualized in the Christian religion.

Sky blue is a play on words: the color is existentially blue and heavenly at the same time, but can also be deadly cold. Belova is alluding to the practice of "safe words" in the BDSM community, which often contain colors. Blue is one of them and is also used in Russian to refer to homosexual men.
