One rule for the shared studio spaces at the university was to comment on other students' paintings only when asked. Some comments, however casual, can influence one's own work for a long time.

When people share a space to work, sooner or later they influence each other. Like most artists I know, I also share a studio. My neighbor's works hang on the other side of the room. While I paint, they hang in my back, looking over my shoulder. Sometimes I turn around and ask their opinion.
