NO COLOURS ON THE SURFACE

Elizaveta Podgornaia

Born in St. Petersburg, Elizaveta Podgornaia is a painter, sculptor, and most recently a photographer who creates novel constructions of clay, color, and fabric that subsequently only exist in her abstract photographs. These hybrids balance between the known and the unknown and can be judged individually with the help of personal imagination.

Opening : Wednesday, 23 October 2019, 19 hrs

Susanne Gamauf will speak about the works.

Duration: 24 October to 29 November 2019

Elizaveta Podgornaia in the Rudolf Leeb Gallery

In the exhibition "No Colours On The Surface" Elizaveta Podgornaia shows in the gallery Rudolf Leeb pictures from the series "Ochre, Canvas, Focus, Loop" and some new works created for the current presentation. For years she has been occupied with abstraction in the photographic image. She does not carry out any technical experiments, but devotes herself mainly to the motif itself. The peculiarity of the photographic medium, the representation of reality, remains untouched and a pivotal point for her work.

The artist's working process begins before the "empty canvas". It begins with sculptural and painterly activity, in which she creates the components of her paintings, such as painted fabrics and sculptural forms, herself. It is only in the final step that photographic decisions such as lighting and the choice of detail are made. In her new works, Elizaveta deals even more strongly with the creation of pictorial spaces and the combination of photography and sculpture.

Classical painting ultimately always delivers a flat two-dimensional picture, whereas sculpture always a three-dimensional object. With the help of her photographic possibilities, the spatial constructions of Elizaveta Podgornaia are translated into the two-dimensional image surface. At the end of the working process, only a single image exists that shows a snapshot of the former reality; the rest remains hidden.

The result of this multi-level approach are hybrids between painting, sculpture and photography. They enter into dialogue with the environment and the fantasy worlds of the audience and at the same time question the application of the usual classifications such as "painting" or "photography".
